WALL-E: The AUTO-Pilot

EDIT: So...apparently, by total coincidence, this is my 113th deviation.

My mind. It is. Blown.

I couldn’t help but notice that on ’s drawing of her humanized Wheatley vs. *BechnoKid’s humanized AUTO, the vast majority of people were rooting for Wheatley. Now, I adore Wheatley. I really, really do. But I couldn’t help but feel the spread of support was a little unfair toward his opponent. So, I decided to rewatch WALL-E, and now that I think about it, I really like that determined old wheel. He’s not really evil, but he is super cool.

So I made these. Surprisingly, I really like how most of these came out. AUTO is much easier for me to draw than Wheatley (it’s the hat, I think, and mine is off to *BechnoKid for such a lovely design). I did a couple standard poses (1, 8), then a few moments from the movie, and then a couple of additional funny out-of-character things just for me because AUTO always defaults to serious and annoyed and I wanted to draw him in other ways.

1 – Attention. Probably annoyed with the Captain for cutting him off so he can get his stupid coffee.
2 – Abusing the holodetector close button at the end of the movie. I made him too upset for his character, but I like it anyway.
3 – Closest approximation I could get of the moment he “spins the wheel” to throw off the Captain. …Now picture him doing a cartwheel.
4 – …Not. Possible.
5 – This is before he gets really agitated about the plant.
6 – Random…doodley
7 – I drew him looking up, annoyed…then wondered just what was above his head that made him so annoyed. Well…duh!
8 – Salute. This was actually the first one I did.
9 - @Captain McCrea…Maybe you should marry this thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? Well I WON’T LET YOU! How does that feel? ...|D God I don’t know why but I love this one.
10 – AUTO looks wrong when he smiles. Never smile, AUTO. It’s creepy.

I also have a question for everyone: You’ll notice that there are a couple of variations in his shirt and tie color. #2 shows the full Bechnokid color scheme, with a light grey collared shirt and a charcoal-grey tie. #3, 8 and 9 (and 10) have the light grey shirt and a black tie. The rest have white on black. I like making the tie completely black, but which color shirt do you like better?
